About University

L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University was established on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.A. Nazarbayev on May 23 1996. And it’s not by chance that the University is always under strict attention of the Head of state. The University was granted a special status by his decree dated July 5 2001, “considering significant contribution to formation, development and professional growth of a person on the basis of national and general human values, achievements of science and technique”.

It is very symbolic that the President granted the new capital university name of outstanding thinker, tyurkologist and a true Eurasian – L.N. Gumilyov. Such extraordinary act witnesses the scale of thinking of the national leader.

And nowadays we can assure that that the Eurasian National University is a concrete embodiment of ideas of Eurasian community, university of future for preparation of elite staff specialized in the area of Public Management and International Relations, Jurisprudence, Economics, Politics, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Philology, History and etc.

During recent years the University has beneficially modernized its structure. At present there are 8 major profile faculties in its content, the amount of current students: 9042 studying on 59 Bachelor's programmes, 36 Master's programmes, and 13 doctoral programmes. A military department has been established for preparation of reserve staff officers on two military-training majors.

Furthermore, 15 various scientific institutes function within the University such as scientific centres, research institutions, and laboratories. On the initiative of the head of state Kazakhstani branch of M. V. Lomonossov Moscow State University was established on basis of ENU.

ENU is by right major scientific and educational center of Kazakhstan. In departments, scientific and research institutes and scientific centers approximately 900 lecturers are employed, whereof 65% are doctors of sciences, professors, members-correspondents of various academies, laureates of the State premium of the Republic of Kazakhstan, PhD and docents. Names of many scientists of the university are known not only within the Republic, but also beyond it. Presence of many foreign lecturers from such countries as Japan, Italy, Spain, Iran, South Korea, Turkey and the USA enables significant improvement of the provided educative services.

Within the university various scientific and research institutes function, as well as scientific centers, laboratories, total number of which makes 24 scientific institutions. On the initiative of the Head of state on the basis of ENU the Kazakhstan’s branch of M. V. Lomonossov Moscow State University was established.

Presence of many foreign lecturers from such countries as Japan, Italy, Spain, Iran, South Korea, Turkey and the USA enables significant improvement of the provided teaching services and enhancement of students’ scientific opportunities.

University is regularly visited by heads of foreign states, high guests. These visits witness growth of ENU authority. The presidents of states, high authorities get acquainted with university, give speech to the students and lecturers. The meaning of such meetings is essential for ENU students. They have an ample opportunity to receive knowledge and experience from politicians and diplomats defining the main vectors of the international policy. These meetings also enhance the upgrade of the general cultural, intellectual and political knowledge of students and lecturers, increase authority of university in the international arena as well.

Important meaning is also given to scientific and practical conferences and forums which are so frequently conducted herein.

The University hosts Dissertation Councils for thesis defence of doctor and candidate of science degrees, as well as offering postgraduate master and PhD degrees. Since 2005 the training of PhD doctors has been functioning jointly with foreign advisors on programs of leading foreign institutes of higher education.

Scientific library of the University is one of the biggest libraries of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The fund of library exceeds 1 mln. items of storage. Research center “Otyrar Kitapkhanasy” was established on the base of ENU scientific library by the resolution of Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The goal of this center is to store the written spiritual and historic heritage of the country, collection, systematization, wide usage of rare books and handwritings of Kazakhstani historiographies, development and expansion of the scientific base of the library, propaganda of cultural and scientific heritage.

The most important qualitative characteritics of any scientific institution is availability of modern hardware and telecommunication base. At present there are over 1700 modern computers in ENU, 360 of which have permanent access to the Internet. Herewith the employees and students use the right of free and gratis internet access for every-day work and study.

Unified telecommunication network is being created. Realization of this project is a quantum leap in the educational process. Unified information space will allow to implement modern methods of education: multimedia and electronic lectures; test forms of knowledge checking, videolectures and videoconferences with participation of famous foreign scientists.

Material and technical basis is successfully developing. The houses of students with comfortable rooms and modern scientific and laboratory corps with area of 20 thousand square meters were put into operation. A TV-radio studio was opened as well, equipped by the state-of-art technique.

There are 20 sections of various types of sport. Sports contest is held annually among lecturers and students. Many students, actively involved in sport sections, participate in competitions of high rank and achieve great results, bringing glory to Alma-Mater, capital and to the whole country. We are proud of our students-sportsmen/sportswomen by right – they are champions and winners of the world, Europe, Asia and Kazakhstan.

Elite University is not only educational, scientific, but also cultural center. Therefore ENU pays much attention to national cultural, spiritual, aesthetic, moral and patriotic education of the youth.

All this is a picturesque evidence of the fact that main goals, pointed out by President N.A. Nazarbayev, are being successfully realized.
