Philological faculty of the Eurasian national university named after L.N. Gumilyov originates from the Tselinograd pedagogical institute. With opening the pedagogical institute in 1962 the first specialties were "Russian and literature" and "Foreign languages". The preparation of professional philologists within the pedagogical institute was carried out 34 years and within the metropolitan higher school - 14 years.
In 1988 the branch "the Kazakh language and literature" was opened, the next year the department of Kazakh philology was created. In 1992 it was divided into Kazakh literature department and Kazakh language department.
In 2000-2001 there were cardinal changes in the structure of university: instead of 11 faculties of full-time study and 2 of correspondence study there were created 6 institutes. They were Institute of education, Humanitarian institute, Institute of law, Institute of economy, Natural - technical institute and Institute of international relations.
In 2000 on the basis of philological and historical faculties it was created Humanitarian institute.
In 2005 with transition to credit technology training, the institutes were transformed into faculties. Thus, December 16, 2005 Humanitarian institute was transformed into historic-philological faculty.
From February 12, 2009 (under the order of the rector of ЕNU named after L.N. Gumilyev) it was formed Philological faculty, which for today is one of the intellectual centres.
The basic task of philological faculty consists in basing on the best traditions of higher schools, modern technologies of training and preparing experts of high qualification, capable successfully solve problems of the Kazakhstan education. The faculty has old traditions and is guided by the concept of universities of classical type, but at any time the main task of philological faculty was qualitative preparation of competent expert - philologist.
