Despite the fact that the era of energy conservation in Kazakhstan is just starting, the country has a great potential. The most important evidence of this is approved application of the Republic to host the world exhibition EXPO-2017. The announced theme is "Future Energy". The theme is as relevant as ever for the global community. Solving problems of energy efficiency, development of national energy systems and renewable energy sources are generally considered by the international community as the basis of the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals.
Astana is under preparation for EXPO-2017. And along with it is also the Eurasian National University.
Energy efficiency and conservation have become a major topic of discussion was held on April 19, where representatives of two universities – L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Republic of Kazakhstan) and the Silesian University of Technology (Gliwice, Poland) have met.
Director of the Innovation Park of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University Vladimir Kim made a presentation on the concept of Innovation Park, speaking about some of the initiated projects: development of energy based on the use of biomass, introduction of energy management system and energy audits in large enterprises, increasing of energy efficiency, implementation of training systems, burning of water-fuel emulsions in industry and ЖКХ, and deep processing of ashes at the thermal power plants.
Thus, one of the first achievements of the Innovation Park was the introduction of the energy management at the Eurasian National University. In July 2011, the International Organization for Standardization ISO adopted a standard for the management system ISO 50001:20001. The world's first certificate on ISO 50001:20001 was issued by DQS Company (Germany) for Panasonic Concern, the first certification project in the CIS – the ENU (Kazakhstan, Astana). The total number of certified CENM around the world at that time was more than 300, of which more than 180 enterprises have been certified in Germany. The Eurasian National University became the first university in the CIS having certification on energy management.
On the contribution of the University Innovation Park in the domestic economy additionally says a successful holding of the Scientific and Technical meeting in February 2013, which has become a platform for the integration of science, industry and education.
Vladimir Kim also narrated about the international cooperation of the ENU Innovation Park. Supposedly in the near future, the Silesian University of Technology (Poland) will be added into the number.
During the meeting Prof. Ryszard Bialecki, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation of the Silesian University of Technology briefly acquainted with the work of the Technical park of his institution, current projects and cooperation with European partners, including studies in the field of energy efficiency and energy conservation, projects on public health, integration of medicine and engineering. He also spoke about the overall energy situation in Poland and the use of alternative energy in the country. He pointed out the striking similarity of the contemporary and future energy policy of both countries. Stress on distributed energy cogeneration, alternative fuels, with special focus on biomass has been pointed out. Enforced by European and Kazakh law drastic reduction of CO2 emission in the perspective of next few decades drives such a development of the energy mix and energy technology.
Dr Marcin Gorski, coordinator of international students exchange programs at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology, informed the representatives of the Eurasian National University about the program of "intelligent construction", which is the application of the scientific potential for efficient use of resources and for the sustainability of constructions.
Prospects of cooperation between Kazakh and the Polish universities will be discussed in details in October this year, during the visit of the Director of the Innovation Park of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University Vladimir Kim to the Silesian University of Technology.
There is no doubt that the partnership will be mutually beneficial.
