Iliyas Zhumadilov, second year PhD Student of “Buildings Design and Structures” department at the “Architecture and Civil Engineering” faculty, attended a three-month scientific fellowship program at the Research Company Nippon Koei Co., LtD (Japan).
Nippon Koei Co., LtD is a leading international research company in Japan. The company is engaged in scientific research and solving various problems in different infrastructure projects field such as construction, transport, energy and human resource development.
The company also has many branches around the world including South Asia, China, India, Europe, and South America.

During internship, Iliyas Zhumadilov, under the guidance of fellow researchers from the Nippon Koei research laboratory, performed the following types of work:
- has been familiarized with the Japanese geotechnical standards of soil laboratory research.
- has shared some experience with specialists of geotechnical laboratory and has analyzed numerous experimental results by using literature sources for his doctoral dissertation;
- has determined the deformation characteristics of different soils such as clay, sand, loams by using various geotechnical devices (triaxial compression, direct shear device, apparatus for determining deformation characteristics according to the American CBR method, etc.)
Based on the work performed during the internship, an in-depth analysis of the mechanical properties of complex soil conditions in the city of Nur-Sultan (Astana) was carried out, which subsequently makes a good basis for writing scientific articles in journals included in the international databases Scopus and Web of Science.

In addition, within the framework of the second Forum between the Eurasian National University and Hachinohe Institute of Technology (Japan), which was also held at Nippon Koei, Iliyas Zhumadilov presented a report on the topic "Problems of difficult ground conditions in the city of Nur-Sultan".

With the support of the Foundation of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnics “ISSMGE” and based on the results of experiments performed under the scientific supervision of Professor Askar Zhussupbekov in the laboratory of L.N. Gumilyov ENU, in October, a PhD Student participated in a scientific report at the 16ARC International Asian Regional Conference, which was held in the capital of Taiwan in Taipei.

PhD Student Iliyas Zhumadilov during an internship participated in a research project of a research center Nippon Koei. The aim of the project is to improve the course of rivers, mountain slopes, soil foundations of roads and highways. During the project, the doctoral candidate participated in experiments to test a new improved type of soil and tested them in various geotechnical devices, including a large centrifuge in order to determine the mechanical properties of this type of soils. Based on the test results, a dam model was constructed and its deformation fractures were calculated and its analysis was carried out.

In general, the scientific internship was very effective. In the framework of the doctoral dissertation, in order to determine the physics and mechanical properties of soils according to the geotechnical standards of Japan, numerous tests were carried out with different structural properties of soils on several laboratory devices, which generally gave very good experience and results.
PhD Student Iliyas Zhumadilov expresses deep gratitude to his foreign consultant, Professor Akitoshi Mochizuki, as well as to the team of researchers from Nippon Koei Co., LtD: Hiroshi TANAKA, Masaru ONODERA, Koji KOBAYASHI, Masako YOSHINARI, Sreng Sokkheang SUZUKI, Kentaro UEMURA as well as the engineering team scientific internship at a leading research company in Japan. To complete an internship in one of the largest international research companies is the dream of every doctoral candidate.
